Why am I called “La Pirata?”

Continuing from yesterday’s post, let’s finish the reintroduction!

Why am I called “La Pirata” or “La Pirata Cofresí?”

Because I am literally a pirate!

Check it: My great-great-great-great-great grandfather was the Puerto-Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí. He was the last famous Caribbean pirate, known as a Robin Hood figure on the island for stealing from the Spanish and American ships and bringing the treasure to the people of Puerto Rico, specifically Cabo Rojo.

As I wrote and spoke in my 2018 DCA Premier Grant-Winning play "la hija del pirata/The Pirate's Daughter," it is quite a thing “To have Roberto Cofresí’s fire in my veins!” I find my life has taken on some pirate-y characteristics: I am a free spirit with a core crew of friends, who seeks out adventure and treasure. Often, I jump onto a path my intuition urges me to take, without thinking about the dangers until I’ve already jumped. My friends call this trait fearlessness. My family often see it as recklessness. I have come to understand this pattern as an expression of my faith, of my truest self. I jump because some deep Knowing in me KNOWS I will be more than okay.

See, like my grandfather, el pirata, I am compelled by a central mission: Liberating Love, Captivating Hope, and Living Art. A spiritual, feminine Robin Hood, if you will. Una pirata for the soul. And that mission often feels like a wind pushing me off a cliff, onto a ship that’s waiting at sea. Keep checking in here. I’ll keep sharing stories of the life de La Pirata, and oh the treasures we shall find!
